Apple releases iPhone 2.1 update

The 2.1 update contains many bug fixes and improvements, including a decrease in call drops, significantly improved battery life, reduced time to back up to iTunes and faster installation of third-party applications.
Apple indicates that the new 2.1 release also fixes bugs that caused hangs and crashes on systems that use lots of third-party applications, improves performance for text messaging, loads and searches contacts faster and improves the accuracy of the signal strength display for iPhone 3G models.
To update your iPhone, simply connect your iPhone to iTunes and synchronize it.

QuickOffice for iPhone

QuickOffice, one of the Microsoft Office-compatible suites being developed for the iPhone, will let you view, edit and synchronize Office apps, such as Word and Excel. However, don't look for the service soon. Quickoffice expects it to be available late this year or early next year.

The biggest challenge with creating an iPhone office suite is dealing with the iPhone's wacky file system issues. Each iPhone app has its own file storage space, and the apps can't access each others' spaces. So you can't save an e-mail attachment or something from Safari into a public folder to be edited by QuickOffice, for instance. Until Apple starts letting these programs interact with e-mail, it's going to be a little awkward using documents on your iPhone.

QuickOffice tries to get around the problem with an extra app, QuickAccess. QuickAccess lets you download documents from MobileMe, Google Docs or other shared Web folders to be accessed by QuickOffice, and then to reupload your edited documents to the Web. Because QuickAccess shares a developer signature with QuickOffice, apparently the three programs can all share files.

Apple unveils new iPods

The iPod upgrades include two new Nano models, which are the thinnest iPods Apple has ever made. A $149 version comes with 8 gigabytes of memory; a 16-gigabyte version is $199. The Nano advances songs using the same motion sensor technology found in Apple's popular iPhone and plays a new song when you shake it.

Apple also introduced three new versions of the iPod Touch, which is much like an iPhone except that doesn't make calls. An 8-gigabyte version of the new model will sell for $229; a 16-gigabyte Touch will be $299 and a 32 GB model will be $399.

Best Buy Begins Selling iPhone 3G

On Sunday 9/7, Best Buy became the first third-party retailer to begin selling the iPhone 3G. Obviously, Apple is trying to reach more customers, especially those who don't specifically plan on buying an iPhone.

So, there is one more reason to go to a Best Buy store. However, don't expect to get any discounts for shopping at Best Buy as they will sell the 8GB and 16GB models for the same price.

The iPhone 3G Gets Unlocked!!!

A group in Brazil has announced that they have unlocked the new 3G iPhone to run on other carriers' networks.
They have managed to unlock Apple's iPhone 3G to operate on almost any GSM carrier. On its Web site, http://desbloqueiobr.com.br/portal/, there is a video showing the unlocked handset making a phone call.

The unlocking process involved modifying the phone's SIM hardware so the International Mobile Subscriber Identity can be overwritten. The procedure allows iPhone 3G users to makes calls with any compatible GSM carrier, not just ones with which Apple has an exclusive agreement. But users of an unlocked phone wouldn't be guaranteed to have 3G-network access, and Apple could potentially wipe out the hack with a software update.
The company plans to charge between $250 and $375 to unlock a phone.

Although Apple has been trying everything to avoid jailbreaking of its phones, it looks like hackers around the world are trying harder...

iPhone 2.1 Update

Apple is going to introduce a new software update for the iPhone soon, which may have some new GPS features that would imply turn-by-turn directions.
Another feature which may or may not make it into 2.1 is the ability to copy/paste. If you consider that there are already some applications out there which allow users to copy and paste on iPhone, Apple is most likely to have these features in the new version.
It has been also rumored that the 2.1 version will provide background push notification service that allows live apps to receive Internet data while shut down.

I hate my iPhone because...

...its battery doesnt last very long. 2-day average with conservative use
...there is no call timer.
...can't send pics via MMS or forward messages.
...can't record videos.
...only 2 MP camera. Plus you can't zoom or adjust brightness. Awgh!
...no inbox, outbox, drafts, templates folders in the message menu.
...you can only one-way transfer your files unless you pay for 3rd party software. Thanks Apple!

I love my iPhone because...

...it's also an iPod!! Music, Videos, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts... It's a great entertainment device especially when you travel.
...it gives you access to unlimited number of applications and games... One-click access to e-mail and Facebook accounts, movies, showtimes, cocktail recipies, restaurant reviews, YouTube, eBay, Wikipedia etc.
...GPS is your best friend when you try to find your way out.
...it's very stylish and trendy. Amazing resolution and graphics!
...it's definitly not only a cell phone. It basically puts everything in your pocket. (PS: Sorry, you cannot use it as a bottle opener yet.)
